A new special topic?
Yes, you saw correctly! This month’s September issue of Valve World carries a new special topic: Materials & Manufacturing. Some of you may now wonder why we changed this special topic but the reason is actually quite simple. As with all our special topics, this new one reflects what is happening in the market. Also it is a result of a discussion that I started up in our Valve World group on LinkedIn™.
I started this discussion several months ago and several good ideas, suggestions and requests came out of this. So hereby, we present to you the first outcome, the new special topic Materials & Manufacturing. If you want to, you can still leave your comment on this discussion in our group, just register or log in, go to our group (or join our group if you haven’t done so yet) and let us know your thoughts.
Apart from the discussion, we also looked at previous Valve World conferences (including Valve World Asia) and their topics and we found that there were several repeated topics in the schedule and materials was always one of them. And as you can see from this year’s conference timetable later on in the magazine (or online of course), there are again sessions dedicated to the topic materials & manufacturing.
So, taking these two and some other sources as bases, it seemed quite logical to have this new special topic introduced to the magazine.
Three articles related to Materials & Manufacturing can be found in this issue: Mr Ron Strang, from Shipham Valves, talks about material issues for seawater applications and Mr Dupill, from Automatic Valve Corp., and Mr Timothy Calvert, from First Energy, discuss the possibility of reducing seats in valves for pure water systems. Also Mr Kristian Lund Jepsen, from Ramboll Oil & Gas, is looking into the matter of seat leakage and their rates.
However, this does not mean that we skip Solids & Slurries entirely – it is just not a special topic anymore. But of course, you will still be able to find and read articles related to this topic such as, for example in this issue, you can find an article from the Australian company Icon Valve Group, in which the company’s CEO Mr Tony Buttling explains the importance of properly purchased and tested slurry valves. So, you can rest assured, we will still keep on publishing articles related to this topic.
With these new developments, I would like to end this month’s Editor’s Page and I hope you enjoy reading this issue with the brand new special topic. And as mentioned above, feel free to leave your comments on this in the discussion in our group.
Best wishes,
Christian Borrmann

Of course, the new special topic will also be present on our website. Mr Ron Strang’s article, which you can find further on in this month’s issue, is an abbreviated version of a slightly longer and more explanatory text. You can find this full text version on our website under www.valve-world.net and then simply scroll down to the box Editor’s Choice and click on the text so that the full text of Mr Strang will open.
